The company, in brief.
What they do
Unstructured turns documents such as PDFs, tables, forms, and scans into structured data that AI agents and LLM applications can use. An LLM is a large language model. It handles more than 65 file types. Its products are Transform, Pipelines, and Foundation, an enterprise search tool. SAP, IBM, Intel, and Teradata use it. It is FedRAMP High authorized.
What they value
- Kind, low-ego people who enjoy building together.
- Hard problems solved with talented people, with a lot of laughter.
- Service: it asks veterans of the US military and civilian agencies to apply.
- Reliable systems in production over demos and experimental scripts.
- Technical depth and judgment over process.
Where they hire
All four open roles are full time and remote. The staff and principal engineering role prefers people in San Francisco, the Bay Area, San Jose, Seattle, or Sacramento. The public sector software role needs an active Secret clearance. The Navy sales role needs US citizenship. Postings do not mention visa sponsorship.
Teams and roles
Unstructured says it raised over $65M from investors that include Menlo Ventures, Bain Capital, Databricks, NVIDIA, Microsoft, and IBM. It says its open-source toolkit has more than 97 million downloads. Three of the four roles are on the Public Sector team, which serves federal agencies and defense organizations.
- Software Engineer, Public Sector: owns the technical vision for systems that run federal data pipelines.
- AI Engineer, Public Sector: builds RAG pipelines and agent systems for government and military clients. RAG feeds retrieved documents to an LLM. Half the time goes to building, 30 percent to research, and 20 percent to strategy.
- Navy Account Executive: the only seller to the Navy and Marine Corps, in a new territory.
- Principal and Staff Software Engineers: set the architecture of the data transformation and retrieval platform.
Every posting gives a pay range and offers equity.
What they look for
All three engineering roles ask for strong Python. The principal and staff role asks for ten or more years in distributed systems or data architecture, and deep Kubernetes and Postgres skills. The public sector software role asks for five to nine years building software for US government or Department of Defense networks. It also asks for a cloud such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
The AI engineer role asks for production RAG pipelines on messy data, agent system design, and AWS or GovCloud. It also asks for comfort in air-gapped networks, which have no link to the internet. A clearance is a plus. The Navy sales role asks for five or more years selling to the Department of Defense or the Navy, and full quota ownership. It also asks for knowledge of FedRAMP and CMMC, two Department of Defense compliance frameworks. Two roles ask for travel. The public sector software role asks for up to 20 percent, and the Navy sales role for about 25 to 30 percent.
