About Substack

The company, in brief.

What they do

Substack is a publishing platform and media app. Writers, podcasters, video creators, and publishers use it to publish, get paid, and see their analytics. Readers pay creators directly through subscriptions, and creators keep 90% of the revenue. Substack started in the Y Combinator winter 2018 batch and has its headquarters in San Francisco.

What they value

  • Creators who own their work and their audience, and earn directly.
  • A free press and free speech, with clear rules for the platform.
  • Ownership of your own work, with no micromanagement.
  • A product that gets out of the way so writers can write.
  • Empathy for users: the whole company, CEO included, does customer support.
  • Humility and commitment to the mission.

Where they hire

The headquarters is in San Francisco, with offices in New York City and London. Postings are in San Francisco, New York, Washington, D.C., and London. Most are hybrid. Some engineering roles are also open to remote work. Events roles need travel. The postings do not say if Substack sponsors work visas.

Teams and roles

  • Engineering: full-stack engineers work in TypeScript, Node, Express, React, and Postgres. iOS engineers use SwiftUI and UIKit. Teams include Sponsorships, Growth, and Community, and each is a small team of generalists that brainstorms with leadership.
  • Product: product managers own growth for both creators and readers.
  • Partnerships: leaders bring creators in one market, such as news and politics, to Substack.
  • Brand Partnerships: sales, creative strategy, and implementation roles build the sponsorships business with brands and agencies.
  • Communications and Brand: events roles plan creator and brand events.
  • Operations and Finance: business operations, financial planning, and IT.
  • Standards and Enforcement: specialists review user reports, appeals, and legal requests on a shift schedule.

What they look for

Many postings ask you to know Substack as a reader or writer and to believe in its mission. Many also ask for people who own their work, write and speak clearly, and are comfortable with data. Every posting gives a salary range, and full-time roles include equity. The site and postings do not describe the interview steps.
