About Strava

The company, in brief.

What they do

Strava makes an app for active people. It tracks workouts in any sport, and people use it to find a crew and make progress together. More than 200 million athletes in more than 185 countries use it. The mission is to motivate people to live their best active lives. The headquarters is in San Francisco.

What they value

  • Authenticity: decisions come from data and feedback, not assumptions.
  • Balance: people work hard and recover well.
  • Camaraderie: culture is a team sport.
  • Commitment: focus, urgency, and care for the community.
  • Craftsmanship: people refine their work again and again.

Where they hire

Offices are in San Francisco, New York, Denver, Dublin, and London. Most roles are hybrid, with more than half of the time on site, three days a week. Some San Francisco roles are fully in the office. Strava does not hire for fully remote roles. Postings do not mention visa sponsorship or the right to work.

Teams and roles

Technology is the largest area. Engineering hires for backend, full-stack, Android, machine learning, and AI platform roles. Other teams are security, data, and IT.

  • Engineering: backend services in Ruby, Scala, Go, and Java, with MySQL, Redis, Cassandra, Kafka, Kubernetes, and AWS.
  • AI and machine learning: ranking, search, and a shared platform for large language models, in Python.
  • Data and Insights: data science, data engineering, and marketing analytics, with SQL and Python.
  • Product: product managers and product designers.

General and administration roles cover finance, payroll, legal, and executive support. Other roles are in growth marketing, people operations, and workplace. Strava for Business works with business partners, for example on sponsored challenges. The careers page also lists summer internships in the San Francisco and Denver offices.

What they look for

Most postings ask for several years of experience in the field, often five or more. Many ask for clear written and spoken communication, and for strong work with partners on other teams. Many roles ask people to work well when a problem is not clear, and to take ownership. Senior roles ask people to lead, coach, and grow others. Several postings ask people to use AI tools, such as Claude, in their own work. The postings do not describe the interview steps.
