The company, in brief.
What they do
StarTree makes StarTree Cloud, a managed real-time analytics platform built on Apache Pinot. Pinot is an open-source database for real-time analytics. The founders of StarTree developed Pinot at LinkedIn, and StarTree started in 2021. StarTree Cloud runs on AWS, GCP, and Azure. Customers include Razorpay, Blinkit, Stripe, Wix, and Rippling.
What they value
- Put integrity first: hold the team, the community, and partners to the highest standards.
- Drive innovation: look forward and push the boundaries of technology.
- Inspire each other: keep a community where people feel valued and supported.
Where they hire
All five open postings are in India. Three are remote in India, and two give only India as the place. The board files four of them under a Bengaluru office. The support role works 5:00 PM to 2:00 AM IST to cover US business hours. The careers page lists hybrid and remote work as a benefit.
Teams and roles
The board lists five openings. Four are in engineering and one is in technical support. Three of the engineering roles are senior.
- Cloud Platform: this team builds and operates StarTree Cloud. One control plane runs hundreds of automated Pinot clusters across AWS, GCP, and Azure. The senior engineer owns features in the control plane and the data plane, and manages large Kubernetes workloads. The services are mostly in Go or Java.
- Data Platform: two senior engineer openings work on the distributed systems behind Pinot. The problems are in performance, reliability, concurrency, and data infrastructure. The platform is in Java.
- SRE: a software engineer who monitors services, troubleshoots production issues, supports deployments, and automates operations tasks. The SRE team owns platform availability, observability, and incident response.
- Technical Support: an engineer who resolves performance and configuration issues for customers through tickets and Slack Connect. The role joins an on-call rotation for urgent production issues and writes for the knowledge base.
What they look for
The senior engineering postings ask for strong distributed systems fundamentals and experience with problems at scale. Java is a plus for Data Platform and Go is preferred for Cloud Platform, but neither is a hard requirement. These postings also ask for an AI-first mindset, which they describe as daily use of AI tools in engineering work. They ask for adaptability to changing priorities, and for curiosity, positivity, and resilience. Kubernetes repeats across the Cloud Platform, SRE, and support postings. The SRE and support postings ask for experience with one of AWS, GCP, or Azure. The SRE role takes one to two years of experience and asks for Linux, Docker, and scripting in Bash or Python. The support role asks for four to six years in customer-facing roles, with SQL, OLAP, and Kafka. The postings state no pay and do not describe the interview steps.
