About Smalls

The company, in brief.

What they do

Smalls makes fresh, human-grade food for cats and sells it by subscription from its website. It also sells freeze-dried food, treats, broths, and goods for cats and their owners. Smalls started in 2017 and now also sells through stores and online retailers. Other companies make the food under contract.

What they value

  • Love cats: the mission is to make nine lives ten.
  • Treat people like people, and respect their lives outside of work.
  • Let data guide decisions, but know when to move fast on instinct.
  • Keep teams lean on purpose.

Where they hire

All eight open postings are remote in the United States. Smalls calls its office and culture fully remote, with the team spread across the US. People travel for department and company off-sites and retreats. The postings say nothing about work authorization or visa sponsorship.

Teams and roles

The board lists eight roles across six departments. There are no engineering postings, but the VP of Product role also leads engineering.

  • Product: a VP who sets the direction for the website, the subscription experience, and the technology under them, and a growth product manager who owns the path from first site visit to first box and runs A/B tests.
  • Marketing: a paid social manager who runs Meta ads hands-on and brings the channel in house from an agency, and a senior integrated marketing manager who owns the creative roadmap, the content calendar, and the briefs.
  • Finance: a chief financial officer who leads finance and accounting, and a financial analyst who owns parts of budgeting, forecasts, and variance analysis.
  • Operations: a food safety and quality associate who schedules product testing, makes hold and release decisions, and sorts quality complaints.
  • Customer support: a Cat Concierge who answers customers by email, SMS, phone, chat, and social platforms. The role is 40 hours a week and includes weekends and holidays.

Six of the eight postings state pay, and each of those offers equity. The two executive postings state no pay. Every posting lists fully paid health, vision, and dental insurance and free cat food each month. Seven list a four-day work week and unlimited paid time off. The Cat Concierge posting lists 24 days of paid time off.

What they look for

Five postings ask for or prefer experience at a consumer brand that sells direct to customers, and four name subscription businesses. The product roles name Shopify. Several postings ask for clear communication with people outside the role's own field. Three postings say the candidate is a cat person.

The finance analyst and the food safety associate each need a bachelor's degree and a few years of experience. The integrated marketing role asks for eight or more years, and the VP of Product for twelve or more. The paid social role wants someone who personally ran Meta budgets of seven figures a month. The finance analyst and food safety postings list comfort with AI tools as a plus. Smalls describes its teams as lean, and its roles own their work from start to finish. The postings do not describe the interview steps.
