The company, in brief.
What they do
Railway is a cloud platform for developers. A developer connects a repository, and Railway configures and deploys it, with networking, scaling, logs, and preview environments. More than two million developers use it. Railway runs its own datacenters and cloud VMs, and it started in 2020.
What they value
- Honorable: do the right thing for teammates and customers.
- Accelerating: move quickly and efficiently.
- Reliable: communicate clearly and show up.
- Direct: give kind but direct feedback.
- Few meetings, high ownership, and no busywork.
Where they hire
Railway is a remote, async team that hires globally and meets at retreats twice a year. Most roles are open anywhere in the world, and a few are US only. Postings do not mention visa sponsorship.
Teams and roles
Engineering is most of the board, and most roles are senior.
- Infrastructure: bare-metal provisioning with PXE boot and Ansible, an in-house orchestration engine for containers and VMs, and block storage. Also observability pipelines and datacenter hardware.
- Infrastructure stack: Go and Rust gRPC services, Terraform, Postgres, ClickHouse, and Linux kernel and I/O primitives.
- Product engineering: features from start to finish in TypeScript and GraphQL, with Temporal for long workflows.
- Engineers write requirement documents, take on-call shifts, and some work on open-source tools such as the CLI.
Growth and content roles build example apps, docs, and guides. Hiring outside engineering is small.
What they look for
Railway wants clear writers who own unclear problems and know the product well. The interview starts with a conversation about the role. Next, the candidate does a small project, such as an app on the Railway API or a system design. A 60-minute session with the team reviews and extends it. Then come a meeting with four people, a chat with the CEO, and an offer call.
