The company, in brief.
What they do
Prefect makes open-source software that turns Python functions into scheduled, monitored workflows. Prefect Cloud is the managed version. FastMCP is its open-source framework for MCP servers, which give AI agents access to tools and data. Horizon is a gateway that controls that access. Prefect started in 2018 and bought Dagster Labs, another orchestration company, in 2026.
What they value
- Impact: each person can move the company's goals forward, alone or together.
- Learning: use new technologies to build products that help users.
- Empathy: care about colleagues, users, and customers.
- High standards, ownership, and thoughtful collaboration.
- Belongingness: every group and person can contribute as their real self.
Where they hire
Prefect is remote-first. Seven of the eight open roles are remote in the United States, and two of them say anywhere in the continental US. One support role is based in the UK and works 09:00 to 18:00 CET. Prefect has spaces in New York, the Bay Area, and Washington D.C. The postings do not mention visa sponsorship.
Teams and roles
The board lists eight openings. One is in platform engineering, and the others are in growth, sales, support, and product.
- Platform engineering: a staff platform engineer on the Prefect Cloud team. The work is service-level targets, reliability, observability, on-call, and incident response.
- Growth: a senior growth marketing manager, a developer relations engineer, and a senior analytics engineer. All three report to the Chief Growth Officer. The analytics engineer owns the data model for go-to-market work in dbt and Omni. The developer relations engineer writes reference code, makes videos, and gives talks.
- Sales engineering: a senior sales engineer who works with account executives on new enterprise deals. The work is discovery, demos, proofs of concept, and security and architecture reviews.
- Developer Success: two support engineers, one in the US and one in the UK. They work one support queue for Prefect and Dagster customers and share an on-call rotation.
- Product: a Director of Product who reports to the Head of Engineering. This person is the first dedicated product person, because engineers own product work now.
US postings give base salary ranges in three bands by metro area, and all roles include stock options. The UK posting gives no range and says pay is competitive in local currency. Several growth and product roles are a team of one.
What they look for
Python is the house language. The sales, support, and developer relations roles all ask for it, and the analytics role asks for some. The platform and support roles ask for hands-on work in a major cloud, and they name Kubernetes. Experience with an orchestrator such as Prefect, Dagster, or Airflow is required for support and a plus in sales and developer relations. Open-source work is a plus in several roles.
Customer-facing roles want people who can explain a hard problem clearly to a senior engineer and earn trust. Several roles ask for work with AI: agents, MCP servers, or AI development tools.
Senior roles ask for long experience: seven years for growth marketing, six for developer relations, four for analytics engineering, and ten for the Director of Product. Some postings have a section that says who the role is not for. They warn that data is messy, that priorities move after the merger, and that the roles do not lead to managing a team soon. The postings do not describe the interview steps.
