The company, in brief.
What they do
PostHog makes tools for product teams and their AI agents. It started with open-source product analytics and came out of Y Combinator's W20 batch. It now has more than a dozen products, such as session replay, feature flags, experiments, error tracking, a data warehouse, and PostHog AI. More than 450,000 organizations installed PostHog. It raised more than $180m.
What they value
- Transparency: a public handbook covers the roadmap, pay, and strategy.
- Autonomy: people choose their own work, and engineers lead product teams.
- Shipping fast: small teams own their products from end to end.
- Time for building: remote and async, with meeting-free Tuesdays and Thursdays.
- Ambition: aim for the best possible result, even if you sometimes miss.
- Being weird: they do unusual things, such as building a developer toy, and call this a competitive advantage.
Where they hire
PostHog is a natively remote company. Most of the eight Postings are remote: in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, the UK, the US, or with no region named. Product Engineer spans GMT+2 to GMT-8. The site reliability engineer works US Pacific time, in San Francisco. AI research is hybrid from London. No Posting mentions visa sponsorship.
Teams and roles
Engineering has five of the eight Postings.
- Product engineering: one Posting hires for 12 small teams, such as client libraries, error tracking, experiments, feature flags, and web analytics.
- Infrastructure: an engineer runs ClickHouse, the database at the core of PostHog, which holds over 100 PB of data. A site reliability engineer keeps the live systems running on Kubernetes, a tool that runs software on many servers, in AWS, Amazon's cloud.
- Security: a security engineer builds the security operations function from the start.
- AI research: a new team trains its own deep machine-learning models on PostHog's data.
- Customer success: technical customer success managers for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa and for the Americas each look after 25 to 40 paying customers.
- Finance: a finance manager owns revenue accounting for usage-based billing.
What they look for
Most Postings ask for people who fully own projects, stay optimistic when work gets hard, and are kind and professional. Product engineers need full-stack skills, which means both server code and web pages, such as Python and React. They also need to have taken a project from the first idea to a working product. They need to have built things that AI agents use, such as an API an agent can drive or tests that measure how well an AI does. PostHog writes everything down, so strong writing is a requirement. Infrastructure roles ask for Kubernetes, Terraform (a tool to set up servers from code), and AWS at scale. The ClickHouse role wants people who know how databases built for fast analysis work inside. The security role asks for 3 to 5+ years of AWS security and past incident response. The AI research role asks for strong math, PyTorch (a machine-learning library), and Rust, CUDA, or C. Customer success managers do not need to be engineers, but they must be comfortable with code. The finance role asks for 5+ years of usage-based revenue recognition and of US accounting rules (GAAP).
