About PayPal

The company, in brief.

What they do

PayPal runs a two-sided payments network: it connects merchants on one side and consumers on the other, in about 200 markets. People pay, sell, and send money with PayPal, Venmo, and Xoom. Merchants get payment processing, instant access to funds, payouts, and tools to manage risk. PayPal says it has changed commerce for more than 25 years.

What they value

  • Work together as one global team.
  • Keep customers at the center of everything you do.
  • Take care of yourself, each other, and your communities.

Where they hire

The largest share of roles is in the United States, mostly San Jose, New York, Austin, and Chicago. Others are in London, Singapore, India, Europe, and Japan. Most employees work a hybrid model: three days in the office and two days at home or in the office. Some US roles require the right to work without sponsorship.

Teams and roles

The board has about 280 Postings. Sales and account management is the largest group, followed by engineering.

  • Sales and account management: account managers, account executives, and account representatives for small and medium businesses and large enterprises. Some sales roles in Europe need a local language, such as Spanish.
  • Software engineering: backend Java and Python, iOS and Android, cloud infrastructure and DevOps (the tools and systems that build and run software), and platform work for AITech, the AI and machine learning unit.
  • Security: cybersecurity engineers and analysts, and staff security engineers for AI security.
  • Product management: products such as crypto, buy now pay later (BNPL), the developer platform, and Braintree's mobile software development kits (SDKs), which merchants and developers build with.
  • Data science: models for sales, payments risk, and product analytics.
  • Also financial planning and analysis (FP&A), tax, legal counsel, marketing, partnerships, and business operations.

What they look for

Most Postings ask for a set number of years of relevant experience and a bachelor's degree, or an equal mix of education and experience. Staff engineering roles ask for 8 or more years, large systems that run across many machines, Java, Python, or Go, and the container tools Docker and Kubernetes on a public cloud. Data science roles ask for Python, the database language SQL, statistics, and A/B testing (comparing two versions to see which works better). Sales roles ask for a record of meeting sales quotas, or targets. Account roles ask for 5 or more years in account management, ideally in payments or financial services. The Postings do not describe the interview steps.
