About Northern Trust

The company, in brief.

What they do

Northern Trust offers wealth management, asset servicing, asset management, and banking services. Its clients are wealthy people, families, corporations, and institutions. It started in 1889 and has more than 24,000 employees, whom it calls partners.

What they value

  • Service, Expertise, and Integrity, its three Principles That Endure.
  • A flexible and collaborative work culture.
  • Movement inside the company, and senior leaders people can reach.
  • An inclusive workplace.
  • Giving time and talent to local communities.

Where they hire

Most roles are in the United States, mainly Chicago, then Tempe and Florida. Other hubs are Limerick, Manila, London, and Luxembourg. India has 55 roles, in Pune and Bangalore. Many roles are hybrid. United States postings say the company will not sponsor a work visa for that role.

Teams and roles

The board covers banking, fund services, and the technology behind them.

  • Fund administration and operations: fund accounting, private equity fund administration, transfer agency, and trade settlement analysts.
  • Wealth management: banking advisors, portfolio bankers, wealth strategists, and the Global Family Office.
  • Compliance and financial crime: AML and KYC specialists, fraud specialists, and regulatory change consultants.
  • Technology in Pune and Bangalore: data engineers, cloud data engineers, software engineers, security analysts, and test leads.
  • Asset management: investment associates, traders, and portfolio managers.
  • Finance and control: accountants, financial reporting consultants, and control testers.
  • Students: interns in Chicago.

What they look for

Postings often ask for a degree, or for proven work experience in its place. Many give a number of years, such as two for an analyst and five or more for a consultant. Strong spoken and written communication comes up in almost every posting, together with analytical skill and problem solving. Fund roles ask for accounting and financial reporting knowledge, and some accept a CMA or CPA fresher. Technology roles ask for SQL, ETL, and Unix or Linux skills. The postings do not describe the interview steps.
