About Multiply Labs

The company, in brief.

What they do

Multiply Labs builds robotic systems that manufacture cell therapies and other advanced biologics. Each robotic cluster has four robotic arms and runs the instruments that a drug maker already uses, inside a closed system. Its software records each step for the quality system of the customer. The drug maker owns and operates the cluster. Multiply Labs started in 2016.

What they value

  • Make life-saving therapies accessible to all patients.
  • Work on hard problems together until they are solved.
  • Move without waiting for permission.
  • Measure success by impact and outcomes, not by hours logged.
  • High trust, personal ownership, and intellectual honesty over ego.
  • Positivity and collaboration.

Where they hire

The board lists seven roles and one open application entry. Six roles are in San Francisco, where the headquarters is in the Dogpatch neighborhood. One robotics engineer role is in Italy, listed as Milan, Pavia, or Turin. Every posting is on-site. The San Francisco postings say that H-1B and Green Card sponsorship is available for exceptional talent.

Teams and roles

The board is small, and most roles are senior. Each role states a salary range and adds equity.

  • Hardware: an NPI manufacturing engineer who moves consumable products from R&D prototype to low-volume production on a pilot line, and later to contract manufacturing.
  • Robotics software: a robotics engineer in Italy on the integration and testing team. The engineer configures and tests electromechanical devices and takes part in the qualification of robotic cells.
  • Advanced software R&D: a senior or staff research scientist for dexterous and mobile manipulation. The work covers imitation learning, reinforcement learning, and publications.
  • System software: a staff infrastructure engineer who owns over-the-air updates for a fleet of IoT devices, AWS cloud services, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Quality: a staff quality systems and compliance engineer who owns ZenQMS, the electronic quality management system, and runs audits, CAPA, and change control.
  • Engineering leadership: a VP of software engineering who manages the leads of the robotics and systems software teams and reports to the CEO.

A Scientist II role for hands-on laboratory work is in a general interest pool. The posting says that the company is not actively recruiting for it now. A new Italian subsidiary in Turin builds the manufacturing team for the robotic clusters. The board lists no sales or marketing roles.

What they look for

Experience in regulated environments repeats across the postings. Examples are GMP, ISO 13485, and FDA rules. The quality and VP roles require it, and the other roles prefer it. Python is required for the robotics engineer, the research scientist, and the infrastructure engineer. Several postings ask for hands-on work and comfort in a fast-paced environment. The manufacturing and infrastructure roles prefer earlier work at a hardware or robotics company.

The manufacturing and scientist roles have physical requirements. People lift up to 25 pounds, wear protective equipment, and sometimes work inside a robotic cluster. The research scientist role needs an MS or PhD, five years of research and development, and publications at top conferences. The role in Italy needs native Italian, English at B2 level, and a driving license with an own vehicle. Several postings tell candidates to apply even if they do not meet every qualification. The postings do not describe the interview steps.
