The company, in brief.
What they do
Manifold Bio designs protein medicines that go to one tissue in the body. It designs proteins with AI and tests them in vivo, meaning in living animals. Peptide barcodes named mCodes let it track hundreds of thousands of designs in one experiment. Its first programs deliver medicines to the brain. It also works with pharma companies such as Roche.
What they value
- Measure biology in living systems instead of simulating it.
- Share tools: it open-sourced its mBER design model so that others can build on it.
- Bring together people with different experiences and ways of thinking.
Where they hire
All six open roles are in Boston. Two of them, the AI/ML research engineer and the product manager, can also be in San Francisco. The AI/ML role is on-site, and applicants must live in one of the two cities or be willing to relocate. No posting offers remote work or mentions the right to work or visa sponsorship.
Teams and roles
Five of the six open roles are in R&D, and one is in Product. Each posting states a base salary range, a yearly bonus, and stock options.
- AI: a research engineer who builds data pipelines and runs model training and inference on GPU clusters for protein design.
- Quantitative biology: a computational scientist who designs DNA libraries and analyzes data from phage display and yeast display experiments. Display methods test many protein variants at one time.
- Display platform: a scientist who builds an automated cell-free display platform. It screens designed protein binders against hundreds of receptor targets, and its data trains the design models.
- In vivo pharmacology: an associate scientist who plans and runs animal studies, doses the animals, and collects and analyzes tissue.
- Oligonucleotides: a director who builds and leads a team that makes tissue-targeted oligonucleotide medicines. Oligonucleotides are short strands of DNA or RNA.
- Product: a product manager who owns the roadmap for the AI platform and manages partnerships with outside AI teams.
The company site also names a Head of Business Development as a role to come.
What they look for
The scientist, computational scientist, and director roles ask for a PhD. The first two also accept equivalent experience, and the director role asks for ten years after the PhD. The other three roles ask for a bachelor's or master's degree. Experience runs from two years with PyTorch or JAX for the research engineer to five years of hands-on in vivo work for the study coordinator.
Most postings ask for strong written and verbal communication, because each role works with other teams. Most also ask you to work independently and own your projects. The computational roles ask for Python, version control, and testing. Two postings ask for agentic coding skills. Experience with protein or antibody engineering is required or preferred in most roles. The research engineer posting welcomes people who want to move from AI into biotech. The postings do not describe the interview steps.
