About LanceDB

The company, in brief.

What they do

LanceDB makes a multimodal lakehouse for AI, built on the open-source Lance format. It is one system that holds embeddings, documents, images, and video. Teams use it for data curation, feature engineering, search, and model training. Customers include Runway, Midjourney, and Netflix.

What they value

  • Start from first principles.
  • Commit to the Lance open-source community.
  • Own ambiguous projects with minimal guidance.
  • Talk to users all the time and turn what they say into product changes.
  • Move fast and work independently.

Where they hire

Nine of the ten open roles give the United States as the location, and five of those also give Canada. The Senior Solutions Engineer role is on-site in the San Francisco Bay Area and includes travel to customer sites. The postings do not state a remote policy, and they say nothing about visa sponsorship.

Teams and roles

The board lists ten roles, all full-time, and most are senior. Each posting states a salary range and offers equity.

  • Engineering: a senior software engineer who works on the Lance format in Rust, on distributed dataset operations, and on integrations with Spark, Trino, Ray, and other data systems. There is also a senior support engineer who helps enterprise customers debug distributed databases built in Rust.
  • Security: the first engineer focused on product security. The work includes key rotation, API credentials that users manage, and role-based access control. The role codes every day.
  • Product: a senior product manager who sets the roadmap with the CTO and engineering leaders.
  • Field engineering: a senior solutions engineer for pre-sales demos and proofs of concept, a partner solutions architect for cloud providers and system integrators, and a senior customer success engineer for customers in production.
  • Research: an AI research engineer who trains models end to end on LanceDB and publishes the results.
  • Go-to-market: the first revenue marketer, who builds account-based marketing from nothing.
  • Operations: the first controller, who owns accounting and builds the team.

What they look for

The roles ask for long experience: five or more years for the solutions engineer and the research engineer, and seven to ten or more for the others. Technical roles ask for experience with distributed databases or large data platforms. Many name sharding, replication, Kubernetes, and the AWS, GCP, and Azure clouds. Rust and Python come up often. Some roles require them, and others accept a willingness to learn Rust. Many postings ask for open-source contributions or work with open-source communities. Customer-facing roles ask for clear communication with engineers and executives. Several postings ask for ownership of ambiguous projects and the ability to work with autonomy. The support and security postings ask people to apply only if they meet every listed requirement. The postings do not describe the interview steps.
