What they do
Jumia runs an e-commerce marketplace across Africa. Its postings say the mission is to improve the quality of everyday life in Africa through online services that are convenient and affordable. Three parts make up the business: the marketplace, a logistics business called Jumia Logistics, and a payments business called JumiaPay. Postings say Jumia has over 3,000 employees.
What they value
- Working in Africa, for African customers, which the mission statement names.
- Running warehouses and delivery well, because most postings are operations.
- Accuracy in stock and in cash, which both inventory and treasury postings stress.
- Leading and growing a local team, which most senior postings list first.
- The discipline of a listed company. Postings note Jumia listed on the New York Stock Exchange in April 2019.
Where they hire
All 23 postings are in Africa except two in Portugal. Ghana holds seven, Senegal four, Nigeria three, Egypt two, Kenya two, and Ivory Coast two. Uganda holds one. The two Portuguese postings are in Porto and cover group treasury and an internship. Every posting is full time and on site. No posting mentions sponsorship or the right to work.
Teams and roles
This is a small board, and supply chain fills most of it.
- Supply chain: 11 postings across logistics, fulfillment, and the core team. Titles include Chief Supply Chain Officer, Head of Fulfillment, Logistics Operations Manager, Inventory Manager, Inbound Team Lead, and a First Mile and Last Mile Manager.
- Commercial: seven postings. Key Account Managers are named by product category, such as phones, televisions, and home goods. Others cover seller management and a midtail associate.
- Finance: two postings, both in treasury, based in Portugal and Egypt.
- Marketing: one posting, a team lead for sponsored product advertising.
- Customer experience: one posting, a country head in Senegal.
- Technology: one support posting.
- Early career: one global programme internship in Porto.
What they look for
Operations postings ask you to run a team and a place at the same time. The Chief Supply Chain Officer posting asks you to recruit and scale fulfillment and logistics teams, manage local fleets and third-party logistics partners, negotiate costs, track daily and weekly targets, and control a budget. The Inventory Manager posting asks you to keep system records and physical stock in line, and to run cycle counts and full stock counts. Finance postings state the qualification: the treasury accountant posting asks for a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and at least two years of experience. The treasury operations posting describes the work in plain terms, says it covers more than ten countries and several time zones, and says the cash gets tested at audit because the company is listed in New York.
