About Instacart

The company, in brief.

What they do

Instacart runs online grocery shopping and delivery. It offers flexible earnings to Instacart Personal Shoppers. It also offers tools to retailers, for more than 2,200 store brands ("retail banners") across nearly 100,000 locations. Its ads business includes Carrot Ads, which powers ads for retailers on their own storefronts. Instacart started in the San Francisco Bay Area.

What they value

  • Everyone should have access to the food they love and more time to enjoy it.
  • Serve generously, in the communities where they live and work.
  • Flex First: employees choose where they work within their country.
  • Connection: meet in person at regular gatherings, since in-person time cannot be replaced.
  • Give everyone the same chance to grow, wherever they are based.

Where they hire

Almost every Posting is remote: 59 in the United States and 53 in Canada. Canada roles are open only in Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, and Nova Scotia. One US role leaves out five states. Two roles in Israel are hybrid, three office days a week. Two IT roles are in San Francisco. No Posting mentions visa sponsorship.

Teams and roles

Many roles are posted twice, once for the US and once for Canada.

  • Product management: senior product managers for catalog, order quality, ads quality, advertiser experience, retailer platform, and AI Control Studio, plus a director of product for logistics.
  • Accounting and finance: billing operations, strategic finance, internal audit, a manager for SOX (US rules on financial controls), and an analyst for Oracle Fusion on the Financial Systems team.
  • Engineering: software engineers for ads, Carrot Ads, orders, data governance, and developer experience. Also engineering managers, security engineers, and Android and iOS developers.
  • Machine learning: ML engineers and applied scientists for ads, search ranking, logistics, and the Digital Twin Platform, which tracks what is on store shelves.
  • Marketing and ad sales: product marketing, paid search, events, sales development representatives, and sales associates.
  • Also retail business development, product design, user research, legal, and government affairs.

What they look for

Most Postings split their needs into minimum and preferred qualifications. Engineering roles ask for production backend work, distributed systems, and a language such as Go, Ruby, Java, or Python. Software Engineer II asks for 3+ years, and Staff asks for 10+ years and experience running critical services, with on-call duty and handling outages. Some engineering roles ask for experience with AI tools for writing code. ML engineers need 5+ years of models in production, Python, and TensorFlow or PyTorch. Some technical roles ask for a degree in computer science or a related field, or equal practical experience. Product managers need 5+ years and strong use of data. Product designers need 6+ years, a portfolio, and Figma. Partner and sales roles ask for account management or sales targets met. Many Postings ask for strong communication and comfort with ambiguity.
