About Gem

The company, in brief.

What they do

Gem makes recruiting software with AI in every workflow. It joins an applicant tracking system (ATS), a CRM, sourcing, scheduling, and analytics in one product, with more than 800 million profiles to search. More than 1,000 organizations use it, including Zillow, DoorDash, and Asana. Gem raised $148M from investors such as Accel and Greylock.

What they value

  • Take ownership of outcomes.
  • Move with velocity, and be scrappy.
  • Stay close to customers: join their calls and read their feedback.
  • Build a diverse team, and be transparent.
  • Hire builders who are curious and technical, and who work with empathy.
  • Hire for the values and business principles, not only for skills.

Where they hire

All four Postings are in San Francisco, at the headquarters. Each role is in the office three days a week and cannot be fully remote. Gem also has an office in Sofia, Bulgaria, but no Posting is there now. The Postings say nothing about visa sponsorship.

Teams and roles

The board lists four openings.

  • Engineering: a software engineer and a senior engineer on the core ATS team own product features from end to end. The work uses TypeScript, React, Python, GraphQL, and PostgreSQL. Cash pay is $190,000 to $260,000 a year.
  • AI Products: an engineering manager leads the team that builds the AI agents for sourcing, application review, and outbound campaigns, and owns AI quality. Cash pay is $242,000 to $262,000 a year.
  • Product: a product manager owns a major product area, Gem AI or Gem ATS, with a team of more than ten engineers. Cash pay is $220,000 to $250,000 a year.

What they look for

Every Posting asks for ownership and close work with customers. The engineering roles ask for industry experience on user-facing products. The senior role adds five years and mentoring. The manager role asks for five years as an engineer, a record of hiring and managing teams, and AI products taken from prototype to production. The product role asks for five to ten years as a product manager and daily use of AI tools.
