The company, in brief.
What they do
Farmless makes protein ingredients by fermentation. Most fermentation uses sugars from crops. Farmless feeds its microbes a liquid feedstock that it makes with renewable energy, so it needs no farmland. Its R&D lab, pilot brewery, kitchen, and offices are in one building in Amsterdam. It now scales the process toward commercial plants and seeks regulatory approval.
What they value
- Autonomy in how people work.
- Speed, because execution decides survival.
- Ambition for what the company can do.
- Ownership of real problems early.
- Learning velocity, with fast iteration.
- Low ego and intellectual honesty.
Where they hire
All six roles are full-time and on site in Amsterdam. The company says that proximity matters for hardware and fermentation work, and no role is remote. The machine building internship says that Farmless can sponsor visas. The other postings say nothing about sponsorship. Internships are for enrolled students.
Teams and roles
Farmless is hiring for one staff role and five internships in engineering and operations. The internships last six to seven months and pay 1,000 euros gross a month. Two of them accept only students who must do a mandatory internship.
- Technical operations: a generalist with more than three years at a startup or in a technical setting. The role works with the CEO on supply chains, renovations, equipment, permits, suppliers, and grants. Dutch is a bonus.
- Machine building intern: owns one machine from design to production, such as a thermal skid, a continuous reactor, or a clean-in-place system. The intern welds, plumbs, and wires in the company workshop.
- Construction and engineering intern: helps convert an industrial building into the next protein factory. The intern measures, updates layouts in CAD, and coordinates contractors on site.
- Process engineering intern: designs, builds, and scales a continuous stirred-tank reactor for the downstream process.
- Downstream processing intern: improves protein recovery at bench and pilot scale and supports weekly production.
- Fermentation process development intern: runs continuous fermentations and improves yield. The role needs a current Master's or PhD student with bioreactor experience.
What they look for
Most postings ask for a team player with good English. English is the default office language. Dutch is a bonus for the operations role and is not needed for the machine building internship. Interns must be students in engineering, biotechnology, food technology, or a related field. Most postings prefer hands-on people who build things and like physical problems. Bonus skills that repeat are welding, machining, CAD, controls, and programming. The postings ask for ownership without a perfect scope, low ego, and comfort with uncertainty. The careers page says that Farmless does not suit people who want predictable work or a narrow job description.
