What they do
Duke Energy supplies electricity and gas in the southeastern and midwestern United States. Its postings describe the job as a chance to make a difference for millions of people every day. The board covers power stations, including coal, hydro, and nuclear plants, the transmission and distribution network, and the corporate teams behind them.
What they value
- Skilled trades, which make up the largest group of postings.
- Following the procedure. Plant postings name the document number the work follows.
- Qualifying across more than one skill, which multi-skilled plant roles require.
- A friendly workplace with growth and recognition, which every posting states.
- Applying on time. Postings print the exact closing date and time.
Where they hire
All 106 postings are in the United States, across six states. North Carolina holds 72, Florida 24, Indiana 19, Ohio 16, South Carolina 11, and Kentucky four. Charlotte, North Carolina holds the most in one place. Sixty postings are hybrid, 32 are on site, and 13 are field roles. No posting is fully remote, and none mentions sponsorship.
Teams and roles
Trades and engineering together are nearly half the board.
- Technical specialty and skilled trades: 24 postings, the largest group. These include instrument, control, and electrical technicians at generating plants.
- Engineering: 22 postings.
- Project and program management: five postings.
- Finance: four postings.
- Generation and network: three postings in fossil and hydro generation, three in transmission, two in nuclear, and one in energy delivery and distribution.
- Supply chain management: three postings. Customer support and operations holds three, and administrative services three.
- Corporate: single or double postings in marketing, corporate affairs and communications, legal, information technology, security, transportation services, sales and business development, account management, environmental health and safety, and energy efficiency.
What they look for
Plant postings ask for qualification rather than years. The operations and maintenance technician posting at the Roxboro coal plant is described as a multi-skilled role that requires qualification in the instrument, control, and electrical job family plus two secondary skill sets in operations and mechanical work, and it names the procedure document those qualifications come from. It asks you to follow approved procedures for start-up, shutdown, normal operation, monitoring, servicing, and maintenance, and to know the emergency procedures. It is posted at three levels at once, from one to three, so the level depends on what you bring. The executive assistant posting asks for confidentiality, tact, and diplomacy, and for word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet software. Several postings say the hiring manager may fill the role at a higher level in the hierarchy if the applicant is stronger than the advert assumes.
