About Customer.io

The company, in brief.

What they do

Customer.io is a customer engagement platform. Companies use it to send automated email, push, in-app, and SMS messages, driven by real-time data on what people do in an app. Its products are Journeys, for messaging automation, Data Pipelines, a customer data platform, and Parcel, an email code editor. More than 11,000 brands use it. It started in 2012.

What they value

  • Empathy, transparency, responsibility, and awkwardness: the four core values.
  • Ownership: engineers own a problem from end to end.
  • Product taste: engineers think like a user.
  • Doubt about "the way things are done", with forward motion over best practice.
  • Async work, written thought, and fewer meetings.
  • A high bar and a low ego.

Where they hire

Customer.io is remote first. All 23 open roles are remote: 17 in the Americas and 5 in EMEA. One more is open in both APAC and EMEA. Some roles name countries, such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, or Australia. The Canada support role must keep Central or Mountain time hours. Postings do not mention visa sponsorship.

Teams and roles

Nine of the 23 roles are in Engineering. The stack is Go, React, Ember, and AI. Other roles are in customer experience, business operations, marketing, sales, product and design, people, and account management.

  • Senior and Staff Software Engineers, Backend: build distributed systems in Go that send messages at scale. The Staff role sets technical direction.
  • Senior and Staff Software Engineers, Product/AI: build full-stack features in Go, React, and Ember.
  • Senior Software Engineer, Backend Platform: works on systems that handle billions of events and messages each day.
  • Senior Developer Experience Engineer, Integrations: builds the SDKs for Android, iOS, Node, and Go. An SDK is a code library for developers.
  • Engineering Manager: leads a squad and stays close to the technical work.

Every engineering role takes part in an on-call rotation. Most ask engineers to use AI agents to make changes across many files. Every posting gives a pay range or a set salary, and most include stock options. Benefits include unlimited paid time off and 16 weeks of paid parental leave.

What they look for

Senior backend and product engineers need seven or more years of experience. The Staff backend role asks for ten or more. Backend roles ask for Go or a similar statically typed language, cloud work on AWS or GCP, and relational databases such as MySQL. Product roles also ask for TypeScript and React. Backend roles ask for observability tools and for running production systems. Most engineering roles ask for a bias for action over perfection. The developer experience role asks for strong skill with LLMs and AI coding tools such as Claude, Cursor, or Codex. An LLM is a large language model.

The Engineering Manager role asks for three or more years managing engineers at a SaaS company. The product manager role asks for seven or more years and some technical skill, such as building basic web applications. Several roles ask for strong written communication. Engineering interviews include a system design interview and a take-home task.
