About Counterpart

The company, in brief.

What they do

Counterpart sells management and professional liability insurance to small businesses through brokers. Its platform, which it calls Agentic Insurance, uses AI in underwriting, broker service, risk mitigation, and claims. A rated carriers back the policies. Counterpart says that it wrote more than 35,000 policies and that more than 2,800 brokers use its platform.

What they value

  • Conjoin expectations: know what others expect of you, and say what you expect of them.
  • Speak boldly and honestly: give colleagues the feedback that they need.
  • Be entrepreneurial: put action before perfection, and use AI tools to ship faster.
  • Practice omotenashi, or selfless hospitality: do more than partners expect, and trust follows.
  • Hold nothing as sacred: make routines, and change them often.
  • Prioritize wellness: work is only one part of a meaningful life.

Where they hire

Counterpart is fully distributed and has no office. All eight open roles are remote. Four are limited to the United States, and three name no country. One contract engineering role is open in seven Latin American countries. The team meets in person a couple of times each year. The postings do not mention visa sponsorship.

Teams and roles

The board lists eight roles. Four of them are in the Technical Platform department.

  • Technical Platform: a product engineer, a staff product engineer on contract, an engineering lead, and a VP of Engineering. Product engineers gather requirements from users, build with AI agents, and monitor their services in production. The stack is Python, Django, AWS, React, and PostgreSQL. An engineering lead is the architect for one domain, such as the claims system or the underwriting platform. People management is optional in that role.
  • Field: a production risk engineer for professional liability, with a focus on architects and engineers. Risk engineers are the underwriting team. This one prices accounts, sends quotes, and works with wholesale brokers.
  • Claims: a claims manager who investigates coverage, liability, and damages, and who directs outside counsel.
  • Finance: an accounting manager who owns accounts receivable, accounts payable, and expense management, and who reports to the Controller.
  • Data: a product operations lead who runs new insurance product launches and one process for each change to coverage, rules, or pricing.

The engineering organization is flat by design. Every posting gives a pay range. The contract role in Latin America pays in US dollars, and its meetings are often in US time zones.

What they look for

Most postings ask for daily work with AI tools or agents. Three engineering postings name Claude Code and Cursor. The accounting and product operations roles ask for the same habit, and the accounting manager builds agents for reconciliations. The engineer and lead roles need Python and Django, and experience with distributed, remote teams. The product engineer role asks for three or more years across the full stack. The staff role asks for ten or more.

The two product engineer postings also ask for end-to-end ownership and for requirements gathered directly from users. They and the lead role ask for curiosity about the business and low ego.

Insurance experience is required for the claims and risk engineer roles. The claims manager needs two years with liability claims, and state adjuster licenses within 90 days of hire. The risk engineer needs three to seven years of underwriting and a network of brokers. Both roles travel. For the accounting and product operations roles, insurance experience is a plus.

One posting warns that feedback is direct and that the pace is fast. The interview flow has a recruiter interview, a hiring manager interview, cross-functional interviews, and a case study on a real deliverable. Some roles meet the CEO. Reference and background checks come before the offer.
