About commercetools

The company, in brief.

What they do

commercetools sells Sphere, a headless, API-first commerce platform for large companies. Headless means the shop front is separate from the back end. It runs product catalogs, carts and orders, prices, promotions, stock, and search for sales to consumers and businesses. More than 500 enterprises use it. It now builds AI agents for what it calls autonomous commerce.

What they value

  • Drive results: deliver measurable impact and challenge the status quo.
  • Cultivate belonging: build inclusive teams where different views count.
  • Champion customers: work closely with customers on outcomes that matter.
  • Adapt boldly: own mistakes, learn from failures, and decide boldly.
  • The best idea wins, not the loudest voice.

Where they hire

The 35 open roles are in Munich, Berlin, Boston, London, Valencia, and North Carolina. Most are hybrid, with three days a week in an office. Four sales roles are remote, in the United States and the Netherlands. Three roles are in the office five days a week. The company offers visa sponsorship for some roles and locations.

Teams and roles

The board lists 35 postings in six departments. Many roles repeat for each city.

  • Engineering, 16 postings: senior search backend engineers and senior AI search engineers build the search API for product discovery. There is also a principal engineer for product security.
  • Sales, 6 postings: senior named account executives who sell to new enterprise customers.
  • Marketing, 6 postings: a business development representative, demand generation roles, a product marketing manager, and a leader for the global business development team.
  • Customer, 4 postings: senior customer success managers.
  • People, 2 postings: talent acquisition partners who hire for sales.
  • Operations, 1 posting: a senior workplace engineer for IT and security in Munich.

The search teams write Scala on the JVM, with Elasticsearch, MongoDB, Kubernetes, and Terraform. Engineers take part in on-call rotations with a team spread across the world. Every posting includes an equity program.

The interview process has a talk with a talent acquisition partner, a skills interview, a Guiding Stars interview on the values, and a team interview. Most technical roles include an assessment. New hires meet each quarter in Munich or Berlin for onboarding, and the company pays the travel.

What they look for

Engineering roles ask for five or more years as a software engineer. Search roles want work on the JVM or with search engines such as Elasticsearch, Solr, or OpenSearch. The search backend role says that you can learn Scala on the job. Product security asks for five or more years of hands-on product security work, two of them as a leader.

Sales roles want enterprise SaaS sales, quotas of $1M or more in new annual revenue, and the MEDDPICC sales method. Marketing roles ask for three to more than ten years of B2B SaaS experience. The customer success role wants retail or e-commerce experience and about 25% travel.

Every role needs fluent English. Most postings ask for curiosity about AI tools at work. The workplace engineer role also needs German at level B1.
