About Cohere

The company, in brief.

What they do

Cohere builds foundation models and AI products for enterprises. North is an AI agent platform for work, and Compass is for search. Its models include Command, Embed, Rerank, and Transcribe, which customers run on premises or in a private VPC. Cohere started in 2019 in Toronto and plans to merge with Aleph Alpha of Germany.

What they value

  • Momentum: move quickly and trust each other.
  • Openness: welcome different views.
  • Autonomy: give people flexibility and ownership.
  • High agency and care for what the team builds.
  • Argue a view, change your mind with evidence, then commit.

Where they hire

Most roles are remote with no office minimum. The listed city sets the time zone. Offices are in Toronto, Montreal, New York, San Francisco, London, Paris, Seoul, and Berlin. Most roles are in Canada and the US, then Europe. Public sector roles often need clearance or citizenship. Postings do not mention visa sponsorship.

Teams and roles

Levels run from intern to senior, staff, lead, and engineering manager. Postings ask engineers to use AI in their work.

  • Modeling: Members of Technical Staff for pre-training data, post-training, RL, multilingual and multimodal models, evaluation, and safety. Python with JAX or PyTorch, and distributed training with Kubernetes or Slurm and Ray.
  • Inference and training infrastructure: model serving and GPU clusters on GCP, Azure, AWS, and OCI, in Go, C++, or Python with vLLM or SGLang.
  • Forward deployed engineering: the largest group. It deploys North into private cloud and on-premises sites with Kubernetes and Helm, often with 20 to 40 percent travel.
  • Product engineering: North agents, integrations, retrieval, and mobile apps in Python, TypeScript, and React.

Product managers own parts of North and work with engineers at the code level. Revenue is the largest non-engineering group.

What they look for

Cohere does not separate engineering and research strongly, so it wants engineers who go deep on models and systems. The interview starts with an application review and a recruiter call. Some roles add a take-home. Then come a hiring manager meeting and a final round with the team. Interviews are on video when possible. Cohere uses AI tools to screen some applicants and never asks candidates for payment.
