What they do

Censys scans the entire reachable internet from data centers around the world. It builds a map of the internet from the results. Security teams use the Censys Platform to find threats, hunt attackers, and manage their exposure on the internet. Censys says that half of the Fortune 500 and government agencies use it.

Where they hire

Most engineering and product roles are remote in the United States, and some also accept Canada. Sales roles name US regions, the Washington, D.C. area for federal work, Europe, the UAE, Southeast Asia, Australia, and Seoul. One product role needs US citizenship. Postings do not mention visa sponsorship. New hires go to Ann Arbor for onboarding.

Teams and roles

Censys has its headquarters in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and offices in Los Altos, Kirkland, and Tysons Corner. It raised $70 million in a Series D round led by Morgan Stanley. Of the 28 open roles, 12 are in sales, 11 in engineering, 3 in marketing, and 2 in product.

• Scanning and data platform: a staff scanning engineer, a distributed systems engineer, and an engineering manager build the systems that collect and store scan data.
• Product engineering: staff backend engineers lead the Exposure Management and threat hunting products. An exposure is a weak point that attackers can reach.
• AI and machine learning: senior engineers build LLM features and RAG pipelines over internet-scale data. An LLM is a large language model. RAG feeds retrieved data to an LLM.
• Infrastructure and integrations: a staff site reliability engineer owns the network, and a senior engineer builds links to SIEM and SOAR security tools.
• Research tools: a systems engineer builds malware analysis pipelines and a threat graph that connects indicators to attackers.
• Sales: channel, partner, federal, and enterprise sales roles, solutions engineers, and a sales development role in the UAE.

All but one of the US postings give a pay range, with bonus eligibility and equity.

What they look for

Staff engineering roles ask for ten or more years of experience, and senior roles for five or more. Go is the main backend language, and Python is common in AI and machine learning work. Many roles ask for distributed systems, a cloud such as AWS, GCP, or Azure, and message queues such as Kafka or Pub/Sub. The exposure management role asks for a deep knowledge of how the internet works, such as DNS and certificates. Many postings ask for curiosity and sound judgment in the use of AI. Sales roles ask for five or more years of sales, often in cybersecurity or with federal accounts. Candidates keep their cameras on in video interviews.
