What they do
Catawiki runs an online marketplace where people buy and sell special objects at auction. Its in-house experts select the objects, and more than 100,000 items go to auction each week. Postings say the company sold over 25 million objects and gets more than 10 million visitors a month. Its mission is to become the most popular destination for special objects.
What they value
- Take ownership and drive impact.
- Be open to change and feedback.
- Be passionate about the mission and the customers.
- A flat structure, where every role has a broad scope.
- An inclusive and queer-friendly workplace, with more than 60 nationalities.
- Apply when you do not meet every requirement, which every Posting asks.
Where they hire
Of 41 Postings, 30 name the Netherlands, mostly Amsterdam, and five name Lisbon. Expert and sales roles also name Italy, Belgium, France, Germany, Spain, India, and Japan, and at least ten are fully remote. Office roles are hybrid, with two office days a week. Three engineering Postings refuse visa sponsorship. Four Amsterdam Postings offer a relocation package.
Teams and roles
The board has 41 Postings. Experts are the largest group.
- Experts: 12 Postings for people who select and price objects in one category, such as watches, coins, stamps, comics, model trains, trading cards, tribal art, and jewellery.
- Engineering and security: Backend Engineers in Amsterdam and Lisbon, a Frontend Engineer, a Lead Security Engineer, and a Security Tech Lead Manager. The Lisbon backend Posting builds a talent pipeline and is not an open position.
- Data science: a Data Scientist and a Senior Data Scientist for machine learning, and a Senior Data Scientist for product insights.
- Product and design: Senior Product Managers for Demand and for Shipping, and a Senior UX Designer for the seller experience.
- Sales and category management: business developers who find sellers in Italy, India, and for Catawiki Live, plus category leads for art.
- People, finance, marketing, and legal: IT support, people operations, accounting, a campaigns specialist, and interns. Six Postings are internships, and most of them need enrollment at a Dutch university.
What they look for
Every Posting asks for an English CV and cover letter, and about half ask for fluent or excellent English. Roles tied to one market add its language: Italian for the jewellery business developer, Japanese for the watch expert in Japan, and Dutch for the Catawiki Live role.
Engineering teams are small, autonomous, and own their microservices from design to operation. The backend stack is mainly Ruby, but the Posting does not require Ruby experience. It asks for 7 or more years of software development and 3 or more years on customer-facing products. The frontend stack is TypeScript and ReactJS. The platform runs on Google Cloud and Kubernetes. Security roles want hands-on application and cloud security work, threat modelling, and code in Ruby, Python, Go, or a similar language.
Data science roles want a strong quantitative background, fluent Python, SQL, and machine learning models deployed in production at scale. The product insights role wants 6 or more years of experience and A/B test design.
The Senior Product Manager for Demand and the Senior UX Designer each need at least five years of experience, preferably in ecommerce or marketplaces. Both Postings ask for systems thinking and for the use of AI tools to prototype quickly.
Expert roles want deep knowledge of one category, a commercial mindset, and a network of dealers and collectors. Experts also use auction data to set prices.
