What they do
The American Red Cross collects blood and responds to disasters. Its postings call it the world's largest humanitarian network. The largest part of the board is blood services: drawing blood from donors, driving it between sites, processing it, and testing it in labs. The rest covers disaster relief, services to the armed forces, fundraising, and volunteer programmes.
What they value
- Purpose over pay, phrased in every posting as a career that is a force for good.
- Measuring success in people helped and communities made whole.
- Hiring without medical experience, because the training is paid for.
- Being a team that is exceptional yet unassuming, which every posting states.
- Respecting who you are away from work as much as what you do at work.
Where they hire
All 364 postings are in the United States. Farmington in Connecticut holds 10, Philadelphia eight, St Louis eight, Nashville eight, and Dedham in Massachusetts eight. Chicago, Douglasville, Indianapolis, Burlington, and Cleveland hold five each, and the rest spread thin across most states. Some name a whole state, such as Statewide, CA. Only 19 postings offer any remote work.
Teams and roles
Blood is the business, so collections and manufacturing dominate the board.
- Collections: 108 postings, by far the largest group. These are the phlebotomists and blood collection staff who run donation drives.
- Manufacturing: 56 postings, which process what is collected.
- Disaster services: 45 postings, including recovery managers for named events such as the Los Angeles wildfires long-term recovery operation.
- Services to the armed forces programs: 26 postings.
- Donor recruitment services: 18 postings, which find the donors.
- Lab services: 17 postings.
- General facilities: 16 postings.
- Fundraising, volunteer programs, and program management: 10 postings each.
- Operations and clinical services: nine and eight postings.
- Contracts: 357 postings are regular and five are temporary. Three hundred and forty-seven are full time and 17 are part time.
What they look for
The frontline postings are unusually open, and say so in bold at the top: paid training is provided and no prior medical experience is required. The donor centre phlebotomist posting says phlebotomy experience is preferred rather than required, and asks you to use healthcare or customer service skills. The blood collection driver posting is the same, and adds a hard geographic condition: candidates must live in one of two named counties. This pattern makes the board a realistic entry point into healthcare work for someone with only customer service experience. Disaster and programme postings are the senior half and ask for management of a named operation in a named region. Every posting opens by asking you to use Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox to apply, which is worth knowing before you start.
